Today in Nature Magazine, Josie Glausiusz reports on an unlikely cross-border scientific collaboration as one example of how science is being deployed in the search for peace and development in the Middle East. Ornithologist Yossi Leshem at Tel Aviv University in Israel is working with counterparts in Jordan, the Palestinian territories and European countries on a long-running project studying the potential for barn owls (Tyto alba) to reduce pesticide use in agriculture. This is not the only such project. David Lehrer of the Centre for Applied Environmental Diplomacy at the Arava Institute, is coordinating an effort with the Palestinian non-profit organization, Damour for Community Development. In January, 60 Palestinian, Jordanian and Israeli experts met in Athens to discuss how they can contribute to solving the region’s water, energy, food security and overall environmental problems. In my latest for Nature Magazine I found out about a new way to make 2D metals, just a couple of atoms thick. 2D metals are expected to have some *very* weird properties, but they’ve been tricky to produce. A team have showed that by crushing metals between two sapphire anvils they could squeeze them into atomically-thin sheets. Essentially, they built a toasted sandwich maker, but for metals. https://lnkd.in/e9maRmhR
