Researchers at UCLA have discovered that the protein GPNMB plays a key role in helping the heart recover after a heart attack. In animal studies, immune cells from bone marrow released GPNMB, which then attached to a receptor (GPR39) to reduce heart damage and scarring. Mice lacking GPNMB had worse heart outcomes, suggesting that this protein could potentially be used in future therapies to improve heart recovery and prevent heart failure.
