Last week, we had the privilege of visiting Wavepiston in Gran Canaria alongside representatives from the Regulatory Authority of Bermuda. Wavepiston, a Danish company specializing in wave energy technology, has developed an innovative system that uses ocean waves to generate power and desalinated water. Their technology, which uses an attenuator equipped with multiple energy collectors on a string, captures the surge motion of waves to pressurize seawater, which is then pumped to a conversion station to produce electricity or fresh water. During our visit, we had the opportunity to see Wavepiston’s prototypes and gain deeper insights into the evolving wave energy sector. Here are some key takeaways from the visit: 💲 Balancing Cost and Durability: It will be critical for wave energy developers to strike a balance between using cost-effective materials and ensuring they are robust enough to withstand the harsh marine environment. This is essential for long-term viability and cost competitiveness. 🌊 Real-World Testing: Despite advancements, wave energy technologies still require testing in real-world conditions to prove their durability and efficiency. Facilities like the wave tank planned for the Port of Arinaga in Gran Canaria, set to be operational by 2026, will provide a controlled environment to simulate oceanic conditions, including currents, wind, and waves. Alternatively, testing in nearshore environments allows for easier monitoring of the technology’s performance at sea. 🌎 Diverse Wave Energy Technologies: Globally, companies are exploring a wide array of wave energy converters, ranging from attenuators to point absorbers. Each technology has its own unique way of capturing wave energy, and as a result, they differ in terms of cost, durability, and efficiency. Understanding these distinctions is crucial going forward and for understanding the sector. Wave energy holds high potential for decarbonisation, particularly for island nations where space for traditional renewables like onshore solar and wind is limited. At Ricardo, we are proud to support the development of established renewable technologies, such as onshore solar and wind, in addition to emerging technologies like floating solar and wave energy.
