Roof primary structure is nearing completion whilst cladding installation continues on One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha in Christchurch, New Zealand. As part of the Kōtui consortium led by BESIX Watpac, we were engaged to provide global engineering design expertise on this state-of-the-art multi-use arena. Set to become a true landmark for the Canterbury region, Te Kaha will deliver the best of both the sporting and entertainment worlds. The arena will seat 30,000 fans for sporting events and accommodate up to 36,000 spectators for large concerts, all under a uniquely enclosed roof. The roof structure has an overall span of 175m wide by 211m in length and a clear height of over 30m. It consists of 40 radial trusses, or vertical columns and 12 oculus truss members which form the primary structure for the roof. Today’s announcement by the Chancellor is an important step forward in providing clarity about key investment decisions which will drive economic growth and improve connectivity across the UK. The government’s support for a third runway at Heathrow Airport is a great example of this. We look forward to supporting Heathrow and the UK government to deliver these transformative projects!
We welcome the Chancellor’s support for the aviation industry and recognition of the critical role we play for the economy and in delivering growth across the UK. Heathrow is the UK’s gateway to growth and prosperity. A third runway and the infrastructure that comes with it would unlock billions of pounds of private money to stimulate the UK supply chain during construction. Once built, it would create jobs and drive trade, tourism and inward investment to every part of the country. It would also give airlines and passengers the competitive, resilient hub airport they expect while putting the UK back on the map at the heart of the global economy. With strict environmental safeguards, it would demonstrate that by growing our economy responsibly we can ensure our commitments to future generations are delivered. This is the bold, responsible vision the UK needs to thrive in the 21st century, and I thank the Government and Chancellor for their leadership. It has given us the confidence to confirm our continued support for expanding Heathrow. Successfully delivering the project at pace requires policy change – particularly around necessary airspace modernisation and making the regulatory model fit for purpose. We will now work with the Government on the expected planning reform and support Ministers to deliver the changes which will set us on track to securing planning permission before the end of this Parliament.

The energy market in Sabah, Malaysia, faces significant challenges including high levels of outages, a heavy reliance on fossil fuels, electricity tariff subsidies, and inadequate infrastructure. In response, the state government has launched the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 to address these issues by focusing on energy security, accessibility, affordability, and environmental sustainability. We’ve been at the forefront of hydropower consultancy in Sabah since 2014 and are honoured to lead the Sabah Hydropower Development Masterplan (SHDM), a comprehensive initiative to unlock Sabah's hydropower potential and diversify its energy generation mix. As part of the SHDM, we’ve used hydrological mode studies and high-resolution digital terrain models to provide precise estimates of hydropower potential whilst simultaneously considering climate change impacts and economic viability. The potential in Sabah is immense, and we look forward to continuing to support the Energy Commission of Sabah to secure energy independence into the future. Want to know more about our work in #hydropower across Asia? Reach out to Yansong Wang, technical director – hydropower.

Putting Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) into action has been a challenge undertaken by the UK’s built environment sector over the last year to take regulated, active and measurable action to enhance the natural environment. Later this year, BNG is expected to become mandatory for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) too, which will bring new challenges. Organisations have been getting to grips with the realities of delivering BNG outcomes in practice, both on-site and off-site. Along the way, they have been investing, facing new challenges, developing new skills and realising new opportunities. Join us and experts from across the infrastructure and nature services community, including our keynote speaker Greater London Authority assembly member Leonie Cooper, as we explore what’s been learned in the first year of BNG. The discussion will also look at how this knowledge can inform the best solutions for moving to mandatory BNG for NSIPs. With guest speakers from the water and energy sectors, we’ll discuss what worked and why, as well as where BNG regulation and delivery is set to go next. Register today 👇
