♻️ 👕👟 Last week in Hanoi, GIZ brought together nearly a hundred representatives of the fashion industry in a peer-to-peer working group to exchange insights and potential solutions for textile circularity through improved waste management. Source-based waste segregation, building a transparent and efficient waste sector and promoting the role of brands as change agents were among the key topics discussed.     Saskia A., Team Lead Sustainable Supply Chains and Circularity at GIZ Viet Nam, remarked: “This peer working group conversation comes at the right time because we all know that the industry is transforming rapidly. Only when all stakeholders in the ecosystem come together to collaborate and take action, real improvement and change can happen.”      The event is part of the German government-supported “Initiative for Global Solidarity (IGS)” and “Go Circular” projects implemented by GIZ. In these projects, GIZ supports the promotion of textile-to-textile recycling by improving waste management at manufacturers, supporting pilot innovations and promoting health and safety in the waste sector, including waste collectors and recyclers.     Since 2023, 20 multinational brands, nearly 500 textile manufacturers, recyclers, waste collectors, and business associations have contributed to this work under the “Waste No More” slogan. The initiative promotes collective action to close the loop of pre-consumer textile waste in the apparel and footwear supply chain, which generates approximately 500,000 tonnes of waste each year. Manufacturers are provided with practical waste management training, an open-source digital tool to track and manage pre-consumer waste, and peer learning. Participating factories are to implement their own improvement plans to adapt their internal waste management, which will be accompanied by expert and peer support.       “GIZ has adopted a very comprehensive approach to promoting sustainable fashion supply chains in Viet Nam. With a large number of brands, factories, waste collectors and handlers connected and working together under the coordination of GIZ, I believe that the ‘Waste No More’ will deliver very positive impacts,” Nguyen Thi Ngoc Minh, Senior Manager Compliance, Facility Engineering and Sustainability at Hanesbrands, commented.      #SustainableEconomicDevelopment   #TextileCircularity   #Wastenomore

Pioneering enterprises in Viet Nam's supporting industry will be equipped with knowledge and skills to improve compliance with social and environmental standards through a training programme organised by GIZ and Vietnam Association For Supporting Industries (VASI) during this year. With enhanced capacity to comply with sustainability requirements, participating companies will be better prepared to meet the increasingly stringent requirements of international customers.     Training participants have the opportunity to learn more about regulations on responsible business practices in the supply chain, greenhouse gas management and energy efficiency, identifying and managing labour and social risks in business operations. The programme is delivered in a blended format, combining in-depth training and advisory services.     The know-how gained by the pioneering enterprises participating in the training will be shared with VASI member enterprises, to draw their interest and investment in responsible business practices, contributing to deeper integration into the global supply chain.     This training series is part of the German government-supported “Initiative for Global Solidarity” (IGS), implemented by GIZ with the aim of enhancing the private sector compliance with social and environmental due diligence in supply chains. #SustainableEconomicDevelopment #IGS

Yesterday in Hanoi, GIZ joined more than 50 representatives of businesses and development community in a seminar on the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Framework and its implications for businesses operating in Viet Nam - “From ESG Framework to Decarbonisation Plan” hosted by the Eurocham and FPT. Dennis Quennet, GIZ Viet Nam Sustainable Economic Development Director, shared insights into the ESG Framework in the EU and its relations to decarbonisation measures, the impacts and benefits it brings to Viet Nam's businesses. Quennet also presented challenges and possible solutions to help companies comply with regulations, enhance their competitiveness in the global market and contribute to mitigating the impact of climate change. As Viet Nam has made a series of commitments, including achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, collective efforts in improving production processes, implementing emission reduction solutions, achieving carbon neutrality, with a specific roadmap are necessary. Participants agreed that awareness raising, legal framework, finance, skills and technology are key issues that the business sector needs to address, and that sustainability can only be achieved if business profits are maintained. Green Finance, Circular Economy and Twin Transition (combining digital and green transformation) are part of the German-Vietnamese cooperation to support the country in seizing the opportunities and addressing the challenges posed by the ESG Framework and Decarbonisation Requirements. GIZ supports Viet Nam in the development of Green Credits and Green Bonds, establishing a Circular Economy and expanding the use of digital technologies for green transition. Thanks to EuroCham Vietnam for the invitation! #ESG #SustainableEconomicDevelopment #CircularEconomy #GreenFinancce #TwinTransition
