Motorola has added a new helpful item in their Support Forums, and by “helpful” I mean it in the sense of a friendly warning. And by “friendly” I mean giving free advice without actually hitting you over the head but letting you know that they could have.
Here’s their neighborly chat on the DROID X forum:
Welcome to the Droid X community! Hope you find some help, tips and kindred souls here.
Here are a few things to know:
- WARNING: Do NOT load the leaked 2.2 upgrade that has been floating around on the Internets. There is currently no upgrade path from that load to the official 2.2 load that will be released by early September. Unless you have some plan to flash your phone back to the current official load, you could be stuck on the leaked version.
- Your new Droid X already has software update available. It will move phones to new software that has some great benefits. It will either be pushed to you, or you can grab it by going to Menu > Settings > About phone > System updates.
- We’re always looking for owners willing to help us with research. We’re especially eager to ramp-up our Droid X owners who are part of the Motorola Feedback Network. Click here to check it out.
- We have tons of great information, tips, troubleshooting tools, FAQs and videos to help you here.
- And please — don’t pull off or cut off the little battery release tab. That’s the little plastic ribbon that makes it easy to remove your battery. We’re going to make it a little clearer in future builds, but for now, please leave it there.
It’s that first item that’s gotten our attention, and this is the leaked Android OS 2.2 upgrade they’re talking about. They ask if you want to be stuck with it, which suggests their official Froyo build will check whether you have their official 2.1 build installed. Maybe they’ll also check to see if you rooted your DROID X as long as they’re measuring customer compliance. What’s next, a drug test?
And just to make sure their users don’t succumb to temptation, Motorola also sent out a bunch of Cease and Desist letters to any site that hosted the leaked Froyo build, claiming copyright violation. They just want what’s best for us, right? And if some think it best to upgrade to 2.2 a little early, Moto just wants to be sure they get to enjoy it for a really long time.
Then again, if some people know enough about rooting and flashing and mod (oh my!), don’t you think they’d be upgrading ahead of official builds anyway? Just askin’.
So as always, once your phone you do hack, you may never go back. Or try to remember, that the time’s in September… when the official DROID X Froyo build was promised. Well, “late summer.”
