A Closer Look at the Toshiba Folio 100

Toshiba brought their new 10 inch tablet to IFA in Berlin, and the folks at Android Central got a look at it.  First reaction: It’s huge! But the resolution is the same as the Galaxy Tab (also announced at IFA), 1024 x 600.  It’s not heavy (1.7 lbs), or cheap-feeling, but this isn’t a device to use while standing around.

The Toshiba Folio 100 has both HDMI out and USB-host ports.  Yes, USB host port.  That’s a type A port, the one you’d find on a computer, as opposed to a device.  16 GB internal storage, up to 32 GB removable storage via the SD card slot.  Yes, I said SD.  Almost every Android device sports a microSD card, but this one can read SD cards straight from your digital camera.  Wouldn’t that 10 inch screen be a great way to review your photos?

Android Central got their hands on a unit at the Toshiba booth, and while it was running something like Froyo, they said it wasn’t quite ready for the big screen yet.  With a build called “TOSHIBA_FOLIO_AND_A 2.2 3.0004 for IFA test-keys” this suggests the shipping version would be something named otherwise.  But it was mostly fast and only slowed down occasionally.  (With that Tegra 250 processor, it better be fast!)

Toshiba quoted an approximate date and a price!  $540 for WiFi only, should arrive in “late October.”  Next year, watch for the 3G version.
