Soon-to-be-former Google CEO Eric Schmidt gave the keynote address at Mobile World Congress today, and he had a few things to say. We’re getting this one item out to you right away while we work on the rest of his address, because we know you’ll find it tasty.
It’s New Math, but it’s a delicious equation, working in base Android OS:
2.3 + 3.0 = 3.1
That means Android OS 3.1, Ice Cream (Sandwich), is going to combine the spice of OS 2.3/2.4 (Gingerbread) with the sweetness of OS 3.0 (Honeycomb). That means our phones (well, some of our current phones, and many new ones) will be getting some of those awesome Honeycomb features, even though that OS is supposed to be for tablet devices. It does make life easier for Google’s developers if they don’t have to maintain two versions of the same OS, and it also makes us wonder about certain announcements of new phones launching with a Honeycomb OS (cough Revolver cough).
OS 2.4 is still Gingerbread (replacing OS 2.3), and we’re talking April. Just thought you’d want to know that as well. The speculations about when it’s dropping and the 3.1 OS release number come from an insider at ViewSonic who spoke with Pocket-Lint.
Oh, and you probably also want to know that Google is going back to a six month Android OS update schedule rather than the twelve month one they had mentioned earlier. Given how fast new phones, tablets and processors are coming out, that makes sense. Wonder what delicious treat will go best with quad core Android devices?
