It’s IFA this week in Berlin and much like they have done in the past, Sony is here to announce their flagship for the end of 2014, the Xperia Z3. The Xperia Z3 is, as we pretty much expected, a refresh of the Xperia Z2 that Sony announce back in February during Mobile World Congress. Rather than reinvent the wheel with the Xperia Z3, Sony have focused on what was good about the Xperia Z2 and well, make it better. It’s a little bit smaller than the Z2, a little faster and yes, it still looks and feels like an Xperia Z device.

Under the hood, we’re looking at a faster Snapdragon 801 clocked at 2.5 Ghz and it’s backed by the same 3GB of RAM from the Xperia Z2. There’s 16GB or 32GB of expandable storage here as well While the internals have mostly stayed the same, Sony have slimmed the device down from the Z2′s measurements of 146.8 x 73.3 x 8.2 mm to 146.5 x 72.4 x 7.5 mm. Other changes from the Z2 include the Xperia Z3’s IP ratings, which are now a little higher at IP65 and IP68 which means the Xperia Z3 is completely dust proof and the device can now be submerged in water below depths of 1m, something that the current Xperia Z2 cannot handle. The 20-megapixel Sony sensor is still here, but this time around it can reach ISOs of 12,800 and the lens is a little wider at 25mm and of course, it still records in 4K.

Sony have tried their utmost best to give the Xperia Z3 industry-leading battery life with a 3,100 mAh battery that Sony says will last for two full days on a single charge. As well as this, Sony have their digital noise cancelling technology built-in to the Xperia Z3 as well as their new DSEE HX audio upscaling technology that will help boost the overall quality of your music and help make the most of your headphones, too. Unlike the blockish, square like glass design of the Xperia Z2, the Z3 is built with a curvy, aluminium design that should feel a little more natural in your hand and it certainly mixes things up a little bit, too.

The Xperia Z3 is built with a more curvy design language in mind and the device will come in a number of different colors including black, white, green and a fetching copper color that will be exclusive to the Xperia Z3. It’ll be available later this Fall and while Sony isn’t giving any details on international carriers, there will be at least one version with LTE for North America, and we’re sure it’ll be available throughout Europe and Asia before the year is out.
