Motorola’s Nexus 6 and HTC Nexus 9 are finally official and both of these devices carry the newest version of Android’s operating system, Android 5.0 Lollipop. Google has introduced the developer preview of Android 5.0 back at Google I/O earlier this year and now they announced that both Nexus 6 and 9 will ship with the final version of that OS. Google also announced that Lollipop will hit Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 devices along with Google Play Edition devices in the “coming weeks”. We of course knew that was going to happen but it’s nice to get some sort of confirmations, hopefully Google will push this update as soon as possible, considering the “coming weeks” part isn’t exactly a precise estimate.
Anyhow, Android 5.0 Lollipop brings along a new “Material Design” overhaul which means we’ll getting skeuomorphic animations along with the design overhaul. Google is of course bringing a ton of improvements to the OS itself, making it smoother and bringing a significantly improved battery life through “Project Volta”, which initially promised 30-35% better battery life as part of the new version of Android. Bolder graphics is also coming along with improved security and support for multiple users on a single device. 15 new languages will also be a part of this update along with many more improvements Google made. There are lots of improvements we have to look forward to and I personally can’t wait to get it on my Nexus 5 and start messing around with it.
The wait is finally over and now we know the name of Google’s new operating system and all the details we need on the new devices. Motorola Nexus 6 is somewhat more expensive than I thought it would be though it does pack a lot of power with that 5.9-inch QHD display, 3GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera on the back. The device is quite bigger than I’d prefer though. Nexus 9, on the other hand, seems just right for me. The design is understated and yet kind of sophisticated and the tablet itself brings enough power with that 64-bit Tegra K1 processor on the inside along with 2GB of RAM, 8.9-inch QHD display is also a nice touch by HTC and Google. How about you, will you be getting either of these devices or are you going to use Android Lollipop on your current-gen Nexus smartphone / tablet (if you own one, of course)?
EDIT: Google updated their official blog post and added Nexus 4 on the list, Nexus 5’s predecessor will be getting some Lollipop love as well. These are great news for those of you who still own the LG Nexus 4.
