Yesterday in a report, it was mentioned that Google would be rumored to announce that they would be bringing Google Fiber, their gigabit fast fiber-optic internet services, to four new upcoming cities adding to the overall number of “Fiber-Hoods” that Google has strewn about the country. Currently, Google is offering its Fiber internet service in three locations where it is live and available, which include Kansas City, Provo, and Austin. According to sources familiar with the matter Google was set to announce the coming of Google Fiber in Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, and Raleigh-Durham sometime this week.
Google has officially announced the upcoming support and launch of Google Fiber in those four locations as of this morning, ever expanding their offering of Gigabit internet to enrich the lives of citizens online in those areas. Google of course still has plans to bring Fiber to other locations and major city hubs around the country though, as you can see from the map below they still have plans to bring Google Fiber to the cities of Portland, Salt Lake City, San Jose, Phoenix, and San Antonio. Unfortunately, there isn’t any word on when we might expect Google Fiber to get an official announcement for those locations let alone go live for service availability.
As for the four new cities that were mentioned this morning, Google states that this was a long-term investment and that they have been working closely with the city leaders in those areas for the past year, so it’s safe to say that any new locations won’t be getting Google Fiber any time soon. Now that news of Fiber in these four new metro areas is official, Google will continue on to the next step in the process which is working with the cities to discover the best places for them to lay down their Fiber lines, where they can be worked into the existing infrastructure. Google expects the network designing phase to last a few months, although it could take longer, and only then will Google begin construction on installing the Fiber cables throughout the cities. As with all other locations where Google Fiber already exists, the internet services will likely roll out in batches, in specific parts of the cities in what Google calls Fiber Hoods, unfortunately there is no listed time frame for when residents of these cities can expect the service to go live.
