Android Lollipop has finally starting reaching more and more handsets in the last month or two which is likely part of the reason why we’ve seen such a drastic increase in percentage of the user base from the latest Android distribution numbers. Unfortunately, there are still a good number of devices out there without Lollipop, some of them which will never see the software. Out of the devices that are slated for the upgrade, the original Moto X from 2013 is among those devices which haven’t yet been updated and it has caused some discontent with a number of users who are still on the device.

There may yet be a silver lining in regards to the Lollipop update however as Motorola’s David Schuster has just announced earlier this afternoon that they hope to provide the software upgrade to the device within the next few weeks. The even better news is that Motorola is beginning a TestDrive for the software upgrade in the U.S. and Latin America regions for the original Moto X, and if the TestDrive is successful this is when they should be ready to deploy the updates out to users over-the-air in a few week’s time. Having said that, there are more than likely a few things that could go wrong which could shove the update back, so even though Motorola has hopes to get the software out to users around the end of May to beginning of June, this isn’t something that should be set as an expectation since it wasn’t stated as a guarantee by Motorola on the time frame.

Schuster attributes the waiting periods that have been longer than expected to a lack of support from some Motorola’s partners which had caused extra complications in delivering a timely software update to 2013 Moto X users. If you’re still using an original Moto X, when Motorola is ready to deploy the Lollipop update remember that the software will be heading out as Android 5.1 Lollipop instead of traveling through Android 5.0 first, so this means you’ll be getting a jump on some devices from other manufacturers which pushed out Android 5.0.2. This isn’t the only device Motorola is jumping straight to Android 5.1 with, as they mentioned they’d be doing the same thing with the DROID Turbo. If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll be included in the TestDrive.
