Today, AT&T announced their own branded Android tablet, in the AT&T Trek HD. It’s a 8-inch Android tablet. No word on the resolution, but given the price, we wouldn’t be surprised to see 1280×800 resolution on this one. It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor. The same one that’s in the Moto E 2015, as well as just about every Android Wear smartwatch out there – except for the Moto 360. AT&T hasn’t mentioned how much RAM is inside, but we’d venture to guess around 1 to 2GB of RAM. More than likely just 1GB though. There’s also 16GB of storage along with a microSD card slot that can support another 32GB of storage. AT&T also threw a 5MP camera on the back with a 2MP front-facing camera for video calls. It also features a pretty hefty 4060mAh battery inside.
As far as pricing goes for the AT&T Trek HD, we’re looking at $49.99 on a new two year contract, or $10 per month for 20 months on AT&T’s Tablet Installment Plan. Additionally, you can add the new AT&T Trek HD to you existing Mobile Share Plan for just $10 per month. Which it will then be using the same pool of data as your smartphone. So you’ll want to pay close attention to be sure you don’t go over your data limit.
The Trek HD does have Android 5.0 Lollipop on board, and from what we’ve seen, it appears to be mostly a stock build of Lollipop with a few changes. Most notably is the folders on the home screen, which look a lot like Apple’s folders in iOS. Of course, since this is an AT&T branded tablet, there will be plenty of AT&T apps pre-installed. It also comes with the Google Now Launcher installed by default, according to AT&T’s video, which is actually quite surprising, but in a good way.
On May 12th, you’ll be able to pick up the brand new AT&T Trek HD in store, or order it online. As mentioned above it’ll be $49 on a new contract, or $10 per month. There’s no word on the full retail pricing, but judging by the price for the tablet installment plan, it should be around $200. Which isn’t bad for a new 8-inch tablet.
