Those on T-Mobile in the US will have noticed that they’re finally getting Android 5.0.2 Lollipop on their Xperia Z3 devices, but with Android 5.1 Lollipop also available now, it makes us wonder when Sony is going to be rolling out more updates for their devices. It turns out that the Android 5.1 Update will be hitting a wide range of Xperia smartphones from Sony starting next month in July. While Sony has perhaps been one of the slower companies to roll out Lollipop to their devices, it’s important to remember that Sony first rolled out Lollipop to the Xperia Z2, the Xperia Z2 Tablet, the Xperia Z3, the Xperia Z3 Compact and the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact all at the same time. That’s a lot of Android right there.
In a blog post today, Sony has outlined plans to update the original Xperia Z line, the Xperia Z1 and Z2 lines as well as the Xperia Z3 line of products to Android 5.1 Lollipop next month. As well as this, Sony has said that they’re also adding the Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 Aqua to the list of devices that will be getting Lollipop, and that they’ll be upgrading them to Android 5.1, skipping Android 5.0 altogether. While the wait for Lollipop has been a long one for Sony users, it could certainly be a lot worse, and at least Sony has been updating whole product lines at once, rather than drip-feeding its customers one-by-one.
If you’re wondering what’s next for Android in general, then you’ll want to read up on Android M, which was announced during last week’s Google I/O conference for 2015. Android M doesn’t have an official name yet, and so far seems to be all about the polish and refinement that Google is looking to apply to all of their products going forward. Gone are the days of big Android updates just months after the last update, and while Android M isn’t going to be available until Q3 of this year, there’ll be plenty of news surrounding the Developer Preview for a little while yet.
