Instagram is the most popular photo sharing app on both Android and iOS, but it has always suffered from one significant flaw. That flaw is that all photos that are uploaded to Instagram get downgraded to a 640 x 640 image. While this was acceptable when Instagram first launched back in 2010, nowadays, in seems less so. In fact, many users have been complaining and shaking their fists at Instagram for awhile because of this issue. In other words, this isn’t a new thing for users to be complaining about.

If you take a look at a modern smartphone with decent specs, it will probably have a pretty darn good camera. Smartphones being able to capture 1080p photos isn’t a standout feature anymore, it has become expected of smartphones. Then if you go a step further and take a look at flagship smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S6 and LG G4, you see that they have amazing cameras that are capable of capturing beautiful photos. This is why Instagram knocking users crisp photos down to 640 x 640 is no longer acceptable. Instagram needed to catch up with the current hardware and today the company announced that they have done just that.

This afternoon a spokesperson for Instagram revealed to the world that Instagram photos would soon be displayed in feeds at 1080 x 1080. This is huge news for frequent users of the service, as it could make a significant difference in how photos look in a user’s feed and for the better of course. Let’s just say that when the update hits you, you will probably notice it. Unfortunately, Instagram did not give any more details other than the fact that 1080p photos in users feeds are coming. Although, Instagram did say that the first group of users should see the update as early as today. Whether this update will take place server side or via an update to the Instagram app is still unclear at the moment. Either way, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your Instagram feed as well as the Google Play Store to see if the update hits your device.
