Earlier this year, back in the Summer, Google took to the stage at I/O 2015 to announce Android M, a new version that was to launch later in the Fall. Well, during last week’s big Nexus blowout, Google took the final curtain off of Android 6.0 which we now know as Marshmallow and it’s already available for recent Nexus devices. Just as we saw last year with the Android 5.0 Lollipop release manufacturers are coming out of the woodwork to let us know which devices of theirs will be getting the next version of Android. We’ve already heard from HTC and of course the Nexus line already has their factory images, but now it’s Sony’s turn.

For a long time now, Sony have become known not for their speedy turnaround at delivering updates, but for rolling out solid and stable updates that are mostly issue free. While the Android 6.0 updates most likely won’t be here for some devices until next Spring, they should land with little fanfare or bugs, just as Sony did with the updates to Lollipop. On their official blog, Sony Mobile have announced that the following devices will be getting updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow: Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, Xperia Z5 Premium, Xperia Z4 Tablet, Xperia Z3+, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia M5, Xperia C5 Ultra, Xperia M4 Aqua and Xperia C4. Looking at this list there are some high-profile and absent devices, most notably the original Xperia Z, the Xperia Z1 line and the Xperia M2 line of devices. Still, the original Xperia Z and Z1 were released back in 2013, so it’s easy to argue they’ve had two-years’ worth of software updates to keep those on contracts up-to-date, but the Xperia M2 was only launched last year, which is a very poor window of just over a year to stop supporting the device.

Of course, this list is more than likely to change over time, but it’s altogether a good list of updates, minus the omission of the Xperia M2 line. We have to remember that Sony has an awful lot of devices out there and that these all need a lot of work to be updated to the latest version of Android.
