Mobile carrier Ting is offering a new promotion that can win current AT&T customers an easy $5 Starbucks gift card. The now GSM-compatible operator is spreading the news of its acquisition of the additional coverage it now supports by giving away free coffee to AT&T customers who use their tool to see if their device is Ting compatible.
Ting has always been a low-cost alternative to the larger carriers and its service has run on Sprint’s network as a CDMA carrier. Recently, however, Ting added GSM coverage to its offering and now claims that over 80% of handsets made within the last few years can receive service while on its network. AT&T is a GSM carrier, meaning those with AT&T devices may be able to switch to Ting’s service successfully. The smaller network is now attempting to sway customers with an enticing promotion, which seems to entail a relatively simple procedure. AT&T customers need to enter their email address, device IMEI, and phone number to determine whether or not their smartphone can transfer to Ting. The carrier will then direct them to a page where the services available for their device will be listed, which for GSM handsets includes 2G, 3G, 4G, 4G HSPA, and 4G LTE. After viewing the results, AT&T customers will find a complimentary $5 Starbucks gift card waiting in their inbox. Note that Ting won’t actually begin delivering these gift cards until October 23 although all units will be delivered before the following Tuesday.
The promotion is already underway and ends at 11:59 ET on October 22, giving AT&T clients a few days to participate. Also, Ting is not requiring any commitment to its plans after partakers enter their information. The $5 gift card only requires AT&T phones undergo a two-minute evaluation process, after which they may resume life as usual or contemplate switching to Ting’s network.
