For months, if not years now, we’ve been hearing rumors of YouTube going to a subscription based model. Or at least offering one. Everyday there are a ton of videos uploaded to YouTube, many of which are original content. Whether they be vlogs or reviews of smartphones and such, there’s a ton of videos out there to watch. And Google wants to capitalize on that. Today, Google announced YouTube Red. Which is basically a Netflix-style service for $9.99 per month which gets you original content without the ads.

YouTube Red will feature YouTube creators, that includes bloggers, actors, etc., who have made a name for themselves on YouTube. The service will be available on desktop as well as iOS and Android. While it’ll be available for $9.99, iOS users will need to fork over some extra cash, as they will be charged $12.99 per month. Along with YouTube Red, the company will be releasing a new music specific app, which is currently slated as coming “soon”. There’s no firm date on when that app will be available.

YouTube Red will be similar to Music Key, in that if you have a subscription to Google Play Music already, you will get YouTube Red. You will just need to subscribe to one service to get them both. Which is a great idea. It’d be tough to get people to pay twice for Google Play Music Unlimited and YouTube Red. According to Google, YouTube Red will launch on October 28th in the US. No word on when or if the service will launch outside of the US. Additionally, members can sign up and get the first month of YouTube Red for free.

Coming next year, YouTube Red is going to get even better. The YouTube team says that users will get even more original content and shows from the likes of PewDiePie, CollegeHumor, Alpine Labs and so much more! Currently there are roughly 10 shows that are being touted for YouTube Red, with many more to come in the future.

Music Key didn’t really do a whole lot for us, it gave us an ad-free experience on YouTube but that was about it. And Google never really added anything else to it, in the year it was here. It could have been just an experiment for Google to see how they should do YouTube Red, but let’s hope YouTube Red is a bit better than Music Key. So far it appears to be a much better service, and one that might actually be worth paying for.
