Carriers in Canada are rolling out Android Marshmallow to a number of devices on their networks of late. Now, it seems to be the turn of the Moto X Play to get the Marshmallow treatment north of the border, if reports are to be believed. The Marshmallow update for the handset has apparently already gone live on Bell, Telus, SaskTel, Videotron and Koodo, meaning most owners of the device across the country will probably have received their update by the time this rollout is done and dusted. The update will be available OTA (Over the Air) and will be rolled out in phases, as is the norm, so owners of the smartphone will start getting the notification on their devices soon, if they haven’t already. Availability of the update can also be checked manually by heading over to Settings > About phone > System updates.
A number of devices across the spectrum have been receiving the latest and greatest version of Android in Canada of late. Last week, it was the turn of smartphones like the Moto X (2014 model) and the HTC One M8 on Telus and Koodo respectively to get the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and earlier this week, reports indicated that Rogers is apparently prepping to roll out the latest version of Android to the LG G4, which is the flagship smartphone from the South Korean manufacturer for this year. Rogers will apparently also roll out Marshmallow for the HTC One M9 at about the same time as the G4, with the carrier’s official website listing the ETA as ‘Late January’. The One M8 and the Moto X 2014 owners meanwhile, are luckier, as the carrier lists the updates for those two devices as ‘Coming Soon’.
Marshmallow, of course, is the latest version of Android from Google, and comes with some nice features like an app permissions manager, native support for fingerprint scanner, Google Now on Tap, an all-new app drawer, more intuitive volume controls and of course, the battery saving feature called ‘Doze’ that disables network access for low-priority apps when the phone’s not in use. Interestingly however, the latest version of Android also brings back the ability to transfer app data to microSD cards, something that had been missing for the past few years, ever since KitKat did away with the ability to install apps on external storage. All in all, Android 6.0 is definitely an update worth waiting for.
