Manufacturers of mobile devices are currently working on bringing the latest version of Android, known as Android 6.0 Marshmallow, to their own handsets. After Google releases the software almost all companies modify some aspects to add new features or change how some elements look to enhance the overall experience according to them. This process obviously takes some time, but once they’re done, they need to test the software to make sure that everything is running as expected. A little later, some companies do the so-called “soak tests”, they release a mostly finalized version of the software to a reduced amount of users so they can report back in case they find bugs or issues. Motorola is known for doing such tests and now Huawei is inviting users in the UK with an Honor 7 phone to test their software based on Marshmallow, just as promised a few weeks ago.
The invitation was published in the Honor UK Twitter account with the message “Like Marshmallow? Like BETA tests? Own an Honor 7? Fill this form in for a chance to test” and an image with that phone, some marshmallows, and the Android robot mascot. The form to participate requires users to fill in their personal data such as name and email address, plus some information regarding their Honor 7 phone including the IMEI 1 Number (they specify that the IMEI 2 won’t work) in order to get the update OTA, and the Current Build Number of the phone will let them enable the update on the device. The criteria for how will the company choose the users who are getting the update or how many will be able to test the software is unknown, but they will be notified in the coming days.
The beta software is for the EMUI 4.2 platform that runs on top of Android 6.0 and the company is making sure to mention that this version might not be stable and there’s no way to go back to previous versions of the software. Also, they will be collecting some information like statistics and analysis in addition to the device identification numbers, but only with purposes of the beta testing.
