Google may have already released the developer preview of Android N, but many manufacturers and carriers are yet to even start the Marshmallow rollout process for their premium smartphones and tablets, let alone the mid-range and entry-level devices. The unlocked models of Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge have already seen Android Marshmallow rolled out to them by the South Korean manufacturer, but the US carriers are yet to do the same for the versions locked to their respective networks. While T-Mobile Poland rolled out the update to its Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge models last month itself, the company is yet to do that in the US till now. Verizon, AT&T and Sprint subscribers have also been waiting patiently for the carriers to update their respective Galaxy S6 series handsets to the latest commercially-released major version of Android.
For Sprint customers, that long wait may finally be over. According to reports, the nation’s fourth largest wireless carrier has now started rolling out Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow to the Galaxy S6 (model number SM-G920P) via OTA. This was disclosed by a Twitter user called Jason, but is yet to be verified independently. Also, there’s no clarification on whether the S6 Edge is also being updated with Marshmallow along with the regular S6 model. Either way, according to the post on the microblogging site, the Marshmallow ROM for the device comes with the build number G920PVPU3CPB6 and weighs in at a hefty 1235.87 MB.
While Sprint is yet to release an official changelog to detail all the changes for the Sprint-specific model, Samsung has made some extensive changes in the look and feel of its TouchWiz UI, which is now much lighter and more user friendly than it has ever been. Apart from the UI tweaks from Samsung, Marshmallow is expected to bring a number of new features to the Galaxy S6, including Google Now on Tap, a refreshed app permissions manager and a battery saving feature called Doze, which are among a bunch of new features that are expected to hit the Galaxy S6 as part of the latest update. Those who’re yet to get the update notification can check for it manually by going into Settings > About Device > Software Update. Hopefully, it shouldn’t take long for Sprint to roll out the software to users across the country.
