Virtual reality content is only going to grow as the platform continues to take off this year, and Hulu is poised to carve itself out another piece of the pie with two new shows that will be shot exclusively for viewing in virtual reality. According to a recent report, Hulu has secured a show geared towards comedy and a show geared towards news that will be ready for VR later this Fall. Hulu already has a little foothold in the VR market with its currently available VR app, and in the near future it will be adding both these new shows to the mix.
Both the shows, which includes Virtually Mike and Nora and The Big Picture: News In Virtual Reality will be coming from The Huffington Post’s RYOT Studios, and each already has plans for a handful of episodes, with 10 scheduled episodes for The Big Picture, while Virtually Mike and Nora has been scheduled for five. There is no mention on how long each piece of content will be, however it is explained that viewers will be able to expect new episodes of The Big Picture every two weeks with each episode containing three segments that each focus on a different type of news.
It isn’t mentioned how often episodes of the comedy show will be published, but when they are available for viewing it will aim to make those who watch feel like they’re a part of the show for a more immersive experience. Virtually Mike and Nora will also star Nora Kirkpatrick who played Esther in The Office for a series of episodes in 2013, as well as Mike O’Brien. There currently are no plans for either show to transition onto the web in 360-degree content, so it’s likely that they’ll only be available to watch in VR through Hulu’s official VR app, and while it wasn’t stated, it’s possible that the success of both of these shows could help determine whether or not Hulu decides to secure more shows that will be exclusive to the VR platform. For now, the streaming service is sticking to the two mentioned shows.
