Quite a few of Samsung’s older smartphones are receiving the January security update from T-Mobile. The list includes a couple of premium devices from 2015 – the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5 – and a couple more from 2014 – the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge. It’s important to note here that while the carrier has updated the support pages of the two devices released in 2015, the support pages for the two older devices have yet to be updated to reflect the latest development. According to T-Mobile, the incoming software for both the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5 weigh in at 60.44 MB. While the former comes with baseband version G928TUVS4DQA1, the latter’s baseband version is N920TUVS4DQA2.

As is the norm, the FOTA (Firmware Over The Air) update will be rolled out in batches, so it might take a while before it reaches everyone. Users less willing to wait for the notification to arrive can manually check for the availability of the incoming software by heading over to ‘Settings’, scrolling down to ‘System’, choosing ‘About Device’, and then selecting the ‘Download Update Manually’ option. If the update is available for your device, you will need to tap on ‘Install Update’ to start installing the latest security patch on your phone. It is worth noting here that this is simply a security update and doesn’t come with any new features as such. That being the case, the Android version remains at 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

It is heartening to see Samsung rolling out the latest security patches to devices like the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge, both of which are well over two years old at this point in time. Neither are expected to receive Android Nougat officially, at least, not according to the list released by Samsung last month. Which is largely in line with expectations as most manufacturers tend not to carry on releasing Android updates for their two and three-year old devices, even if the hardware remains powerful enough to run the new software. However, the entire Galaxy S6 lineup as well as the Galaxy Note 5 are expected to get the latest flavor of Android sooner rather than later.
