An upcoming Samsung smartphone has been popping up on benchmarking websites as of late, revealing quite a bit about its hardware specs in the process. After showing up on GFXBench earlier in the day as the SM-J530, the Samsung SM-J530FM has now appeared on Geekbench, suggesting that the device may well be in line for an official launch at some stage in the not-so-distant future. The device, thought to be the 2017 iteration of the Galaxy J5 smartphone, received its Wi-Fi certification earlier this month. The handset was listed as the SM-J530FM/DS on the Wi-Fi Alliance website, but while that particular device was running Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the latest listings on the two benchmarking sites seem to suggest that the Galaxy J5 (2017) will thankfully launch with Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box.
According to Geekbench, the upcoming smartphone will come with 2GB of RAM and, will be powered by an ARMv8 octa-core CPU clocked at 1.59GHz. As is to be expected from a Geekbench listing, there’s not a whole lot more to be learned about the hardware specs of the upcoming device from the website, but the GFXBench listing doesn’t only seem to corroborate the Geekbench figures, it also reveals a lot more info about the device itself. According to GFXBench, the octa-core CPU on the Galaxy J5 (2017) will be a part of the Exynos 7870 SoC, which is designed and manufactured in-house by Samsung Electronics. The website also reveals that the device will come with 16GB of internal storage out-of-the-box.
If GFXBench is anything to go by, the Galaxy J5 (2017) will also apparently feature a 4.8-inch 720p display panel, which is a bit strange, given that the 2016 iteration of the Galaxy J5 actually has a significantly larger 5.2-inch screen. So it will certainly be interesting to see if Samsung will actually reduce the screen real-estate on its next-generation mid-ranger, when most manufacturers – including Samsung – are increasing screen sizes of their smartphones because of the increasing popularity of the so-called ‘phablets’. Either way, while the Geekbench listing, as usual, reveals nothing about the phone’s cameras, GFXBench seems to suggest that the device will ship with 12 or 13-megapixel cameras on both front and back, which is in line with the growing demand for high-quality selfie-cams on smartphones across all price segments.
