AEE Aviation Technology and SELFLY Camera announced their first jointly developed product on Monday, having unveiled it in the form of a flying smartphone case. While the AEE SELFLY is technically a drone that can house a handset, its creators are specifically describing it as a case with an “embedded drone,” adding that the gadget is the world’s first product of its kind. Regardless of the official description of the device, the AEE SELFLY was primarily designed to bring one’s mobile photography to the next level by capturing shots that would otherwise be impossible whenever it’s detached from your smartphone.
The AEE SELFLY is intended to be an evolution of the old adage that the best camera is the one you always have on you and is advertised as being extremely straightforward to use, requiring just a touch of a button in order to take off. The drone is meant to be controlled via a smartphone app available for both Android and iOS, i.e. it you’ll have to remove it from your handset when you want it to fly. The gadget is said to boast a universal design that can accommodate a wide variety of smartphones with screens ranging from four to six inches in size, whereas its companion app is compatible with both Android and iOS devices. The actual range of the gadget is also limited compared to traditional drones but is still said to allow for much more angles than an ordinary selfie stick. The AEE SELFLY runs on a single removable battery that allows it to stay operational for up to four minutes and takes half an hour to recharge. Its integrated camera boasts 1080p capabilities which are standard for contemporary selfie photography and the volume of its internal storage has yet to be specified.
The unconventional offering will be showcased at the latest iteration of the Consumer Electronics Show which is officially opening its doors to the public tomorrow, though the AEE SELFLY isn’t immediately available for purchase and doesn’t have a firm release date attached to it. The two companies still promised to bring their product to the market by the end of the first quarter of the year, adding that its suggested price will amount to $130. Besides the flying case itself, the gadget will be sold alongside two batteries that will allow it stay in the air for approximately eight minutes in total. No official retail partners have yet been named, though the device will likely be available for purchase directly from both AEE and SELFLY.
