Huawei‘s Honor 9 and Honor V9 smartphones will support facial recognition as a security method for getting access to the devices, as confirmed by Honor President Zhao Ming. The company announced that both devices are set to receive the facial recognition feature, though it’s not immediately clear when the security tool will be rolled out. Additionally, the 2017 dual flagship offerings from Honor will also receive the EMUI 8.0 system update, which packs improvements to the battery life and the ability to predict user behavior. The system update is also designed to allocate resources so that the camera, WeChat, Taobao, and other applications can run optimally.
The Honor 9, in particular, was officially announced in China in June last year as a successor to the Honor 8. The upcoming addition of the facial recognition system to the Honor 9 will complement the existing fingerprint scanner that sits on the front of the device, in contrast to the rear placement of the sensor on the Honor 8. As a brief recap, the Honor 9 sports a 5.15-inch fullHD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It is powered by the Kirin 960 64-bit octa-core system-on-chip. The phone packs either 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of native storage that’s expandable with a microSD card. It boasts a dual camera setup on the back consisting of a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor and a 12-megapixel RGB unit while an 8-megapixel shooter sits on the front side of the device. The handset ships with a 3,200mAh battery, which supports fast charging, and it runs Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box with Honor’s Emotion UI (EMUI) 5.1 skin on top of it.
The Honor V9 was also announced in China earlier last year following the debut of the Honor 8 Lite, and contrary to that of the Honor 9, its fingerprint scanner is placed on the back of the device. It sports a 5.7-inch QHD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and comes with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of native storage. The device is powered by the Kirin 960 64-bit octa-core SoC and runs Android 7.0 Nougat with an overlay of EMUI 5.0. Another Huawei brand that’s expected to receive facial recognition support is the Honor 7C, according to a recent video ad.
