Plex will soon offer a selection of Warner Bros. movies for free to its U.S. users.
Plex today confirmed it has now entered into an agreement with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. As the name suggests, this is the Warner Bros. arm responsible for distributing its content to broadcast, cable, satellite, and streaming services.
Following this agreement, Plex is the latest service to be added to that Warner Bros. distribution list.
No further details on the agreement were disclosed
Coming later this year
Although Plex made the announcement today, it will take some time for the fruits of the partnership to arrive. Plex did not provide a firm date on when this will happen. Instead, the company stated users can expect the content to land “later this year.”
Plex also hasn’t provided any firm details on exactly what content is coming to its ecosystem. For example, this agreement won’t apply to all Warner Bros. movies, but a selection of them.
The only information Plex has provided on this is that the collection will include “a package of library feature film titles from Warner Bros.”
Plex’s streaming ambitions keep growing
Plex might have started out as a humble media player, but over the last few years the service has expanded rapidly. That expansion has also included a move into content provision with the service now offering different ways to accessed streamed video.
Plex already offers users free live TV, podcasts, and web shows. This Warner Bros. agreement is directly designed to expand further on that free content.
Warner Bros. streaming service coming soon as well
Warner Bros. falls under the WarnerMedia umbrella. WarnerMedia is the company AT&T founded out of the ashes of Time Warner. AT&T plans to launch its latest streaming service product, HBO Max, soon.
While HBO Max is clearly designed to capitalize on the HBO brand and content, the “Max” element refers to the content the service will offer above and beyond a normal HBO subscription.
In other words, HBO Max will be padded out with content from WarnerMedia’s portfolio, including Warner Bros. movies and TV shows.
As is the case with Plex, HBO Max is set to launch later in the year. How much of an overlap between content available through Plex and HBO Max remains to be seen. Although, unlike HBO Max, Plex users won’t have to pay to access the movies on offer.
These movies will be provided free of charge to Plex users, but will come with ads.
