Huawei has just taken to the stage in Munich to announce the Mate 30 Series.

After plenty of leaks and rumors, it turns out that the majority of them were true. The Mate 30 Series are some pretty impressive smartphones. So let’s break them down.

Huawei is the first to use the “waterfall” display

This is expected to be a trend going into 2020. With smartphone makers using more curved displays, with the curves being even tighter, like a waterfall.

Huawei calls it the Horizon Display.

Because of the tight curves, Huawei is able to use a larger screen without making the device feel or actually be larger. That way it still sits comfortably in your hand.

Huawei was able to give the Mate 30 Series more display, and larger batteries, while keeping it lighter than the competition. When Huawei says “competition”, it mostly means the iPhone 11.

The bezels on the top and bottom have also shrunk, so they are now smaller than the iPhone’s bezels and even the notch. With the chin only being about 4mm thick. This means that you’re getting a phone that is basically all display. The notch is now 26.6mm long instead of 34mm long that the Mate 20 Pro had last year.

The notch does include a gesture sensor, 3D Depth Sensor, the selfie camera and of course the Ambient Light and Proximity Sensor.

The tight curved display also allows for Huawei to add a button to the side of the device that you can do what you want with. One example is using it as a shutter. And it can be moved to be in the perfect position for your finger. This is because it’s all done with software, as it is using the screen to do this.

Taking Charging Speeds to the next level

Huawei has already had fast wireless and wired charging, and that returns with the Mate 30 Series. But where things differ this time around is wireless reverse charging. It is not three times as fast as before. That makes it actually useful.

However, Huawei is also showing off some faster charging from power banks and car chargers for the Mate 30 Series, up to 40W. Meaning that you can quickly charge that 4500mAh capacity battery while on the go.

The new Camera King

While the iPhone 11 Pro came out as the best camera available on a phone, earlier this week. That won’t last long. Huawei just took it back.

The Mate 30 Series sports a quad-camera setup.

There’s a 16-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 40-megapixel main sensor, and a 8-megapixel telephoto sensor. There is also laser focus available in the camera module.

Huawei is also touting up to 45X digital zoom with this camera. And 3X Optical Zoom.

This zooming is being done with the combination of Optical Image Stabilization, AI Stabilization and 3D Depth Sensing. It’s similar to what we saw on the P30 Pro earlier this year, but it has been improved.

The main sensor is a SuperSensing Cine Camera, which is actually a dual-main camera system, that can take some pretty incredible pictures. It sports a 1/1.54-inch sensor size, and has a video ISO of 51200. This means that you’re going to be able to use this at night without much issue.

The rumors of the incredible 7,680 frames-per-second slow-motion were also true. Which will work at 720p. While there is also 4K at 60FPS also available. What’s also new this year is 4K Low-Light Ultra-Wide time-lapse video recording.

According to Huawei, the second camera in this dual-camera system is a 1/1.7-inch SuperSensing Camera which can attract 40-percent more light to give you some impressive low-light images. It also has a maximum ISO of 409600. Something that has never been seen on a smartphone before.

Launching With EMUI10 based on Android 10

But there’s no Google Services.

As expected, the Huawei Mate 30 Series is launching without Google Play or any Google services in general. But it is, surprisingly, launching with Android 10. And that also brings along a new version of EMUI, EMUI10. That brings a few new features like Dark Mode, AI Gesture Control and much more.

The Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro will come in six colors. There’s Emerald Green, Space Silver, Cosmic Purple and Black. Then there are the two Vegan Leather options that are available in Forest Green and Orange.

It won’t be cheap

The Huawei Mate 30 is going to come in at €799 (that’s about $883 USD). While the Huawei Mate 30 Pro is going to cost you €1099 (around $1,215 USD) with the 5G Mate 30 Pro costing €1199 (around $1326 USD). The Mate 30 Pro comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage – both 4G and 5G models. While the Mate 30 drops the storage in half to 128GB.
