Samsung won’t be calling its next foldable smartphone the Galaxy Fold 2, instead it’ll be the Galaxy Z Fold 2. Adopting the “Galaxy Z” branding that the company unveiled earlier this year with the Galaxy Z Flip.
Basically, what this means is that the foldable smartphones will all be under the “Galaxy Z” branding. While Galaxy S is still for their mainstream smartphones, and Galaxy Note for the large screen and S Pen smartphones. This isn’t a surprise, considering the fact that Samsung moved the Galaxy Fold to the Galaxy Z category on its website after it announced the Galaxy Z Flip in February. So there were plenty of hints about what Samsung had been planning to do with the next-generation of foldables.
Galaxy Z Fold 2 is launching next month
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is going to be launching next month, likely at Samsung’s Unpacked event.
We’ve seen many rumors and leaks about the device in recent weeks. Including the fact that it is likely going to be cheaper than the original Galaxy Fold, and even have a larger outer display. Which is going to be really nice to see. Since the outer display on the Galaxy Fold sported some pretty large bezels – larger than some Sony smartphones.
It will also use Samsung’s ultra thin glass that debuted on the Galaxy Z Flip earlier this year.
On top of all of that, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is also going to sport 5G and have the latest version of One UI. This also means that it’ll have newer specs, with the Snapdragon 865 expected to be running the show – since it’ll be a 5G model. But as noted already, we do expect the Galaxy Z Fold 2 to be a bit cheaper. Though how much cheaper, is another story.
Samsung could launch 5 phones at Unpacked
And that’s not including the devices that are slated to be announced ahead of Unpacked.
Samsung is slated to launch the Galaxy Note 20, Note 20+, Note 20 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G and the Galaxy Z Fold 2. That’s not really all that surprising for Samsung though, considering it does launch a lot of smartphones, and does have three different Galaxy S20 models this year.
Don’t expect any of these to be cheap though. The Galaxy Note 20 will likely start at $1,000 and the others will go up from there. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G will likely be more expensive than the Galaxy Z Flip even though the only change we are expecting is the Snapdragon 865 to give it 5G capabilities.
