You may remember the Sony Xperia Pro, that was announced last year. We’re talking at MWC last year. Which means almost exactly a year ago. Well, it is now coming to the US, for a whopping $2,500.
It’s a pretty insane phone to begin with. But there are two things here that most people will be upset about. One is the price, $2,500 is a lot for a smartphone, especially during the pandemic. The other is the processor. Despite the year-later launch, the Xperia Pro still sports a Snapdragon 865. It wasn’t even upgraded to a 865+, let alone the new Snapdragon 888.
Even more surprising, is that Sony did do some upgrades here, compared to the model announced in February 2020. It is now a 12GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage smartphone. Versus the 8GB and 256GB model that was announced last year.
Other specs include a 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED panel, with a triple-camera setup. All of which are 12-megapixel sensors. Along with a 4,000mAh capacity battery.
A smartphone with HDMI?
This phone is not meant for everyone. And that’s quite clear based on the HDMI port that is included here. Heck, my laptop doesn’t even have a HDMI port anymore.
With this HDMI port, you can use the Xperia Pro as a viewfinder for your Sony Alpha camera, and easily transfer files between your smartphone and your camera. Allowing you to really step up your social media game on TikTok, Instagram and others.
This is also the first 5G smartphone from Sony for the US. It had disabled 5G on its previous smartphones – Xperia 1 II and Xperia 5 II – since it believed that the Xperia Pro was better for a 5G experience in the US. It does support both Sub-6 and mmWave 5G networks.
Finally, the Xperia Pro does also have a headphone jack. Which is increasingly rare in smartphones this year.
