In typical Sony fashion, it announced its newest flagship smartphone back in April – the Xperia 1 III. And today, we are getting word that pre-orders are opening today, with the release date set for August 19. A full four months after the device was announced.
Of course, some could argue that the chip shortage has something to do with this, but this is what Sony does year after year.
The Sony Xperia 1 III is going to be available for $1299. Making it one of the most expensive smartphones to come out in 2021. Sony does have a nice freebie for those looking to purchase the Xperia 1 III. If you purchase before September 26, 2021, you will get the WF-1000XM3 wireless noise cancelling earbuds for free. That’s not even the newest pair. Also, you’ll get 43,200 Call of Duty: Mobile CP points (that’s a $540 value).
Sony is going to make the Xperia 1 III available in Frosted Black and Frosted Purple, with the later being exclusive to Sony’s website.
What specs does the Sony Xperia 1 III have?
It’s been a while since the Xperia 1 III was announced, so we can’t fault you for needing a refresher on specs. Be ready to be blown away.
The Xperia 1 III has a 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED display which does have a 120Hz refresh rate too. There is the Snapdragon 888 5G under-the-hood with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage (there’s also a 512GB model). This is powered by a 4500mAh capacity battery, which is probably the only underwhelming spec here.
Sony has equipped it with a quad-camera setup. There are three 12-megapixel cameras that work as the main, ultrawide and the telephoto sensor. The telephoto is actually sideways and does variable optical zoom, which is rather unique. And the fourth is a 0.3-megapixel TOF depth sensor. It is capable of shooting 4K at up to 120fps. There’s no support for 8K video here, despite the chipset being capable of it.
The Sony Xperia 1 III is a pretty impressive phone, and at $1299, it really should be.
