It seems like Huawei is planning to launch a foldable smartphone that will compete with the Galaxy Z Flip 3. That phone’s name will, allegedly, be the Huawei Mate V, and it will launch this year.

Huawei’s Galaxy Z Flip 3 competitor seems to be on the way

This information comes from a Chinese tipster, who shared it via Weibo. He shared the phone’s name, the fact it will be a clamshell smartphone, and its launch timeframe. On top of that, he said that the Kirin 9000 is expected to fuel the device.

That is Huawei’s most powerful SoC to date. It fuels the Huawei Mate X2, the company’s foldable smartphone which is inspired by the Galaxy Z Fold series of devices.

Huawei will host a press event on October 21, and we’re hoping it will give us a glimpse at this phone. The company may not announce it, but it may mention it, if it’s supposed to launch by the end of the year.

The Mate X2 seems to be a compelling device, as long as you don’t need Google’s apps. That handset, as every other Huawei released since the US ban, comes without Google services.

The Huawei Mate V won’t include Google services, due to the US ban

The Huawei Mate V will also ship without Google services. That phone will most likely launch in China first, and may make its way to other markets later on. We’re only guessing, of course, Huawei didn’t share any information thus far.

If we had to guess, we’d say that the Mate V will resemble the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The Mate X2 does resemble the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and 3, so this makes sense. Besides, that’s probably the best form factor for a clamshell foldable. There are only so many ways you can design it.

As a side note, Huawei is also planning to release the Mate 50 series in Q1 next year, allegedly. At least the Mate 50 Pro will be fueled by the yet-unreleased Snapdragon 898, as per rumors.
