Samsung has started rolling out the October 2021 Android security patch to the Galaxy Z Flip 5G in the US. Both carrier-locked and unlocked units of last year’s clamshell folding phone are picking up this month’s SMR (security maintenance release) stateside. According to a SamMobile report, the new firmware version for the carrier-locked Galaxy Z Flip 5G is F707USQS2DUI1. Unlocked units are receiving the same update with the firmware version F707U1UES2DUI1.

The Korean firm has yet to update its update tracker portal for the phone to reflect the latest release. So we can’t confirm the contents of the new package just yet. But judging by the new build numbers, this update is unlikely to bring any notable changes on the user-facing front. It essentially only brings the vulnerability fixes for October 2021. To be fair, the foldable recently received the One UI 3.1.1 update which contained a few goodies. So the next feature update should be the Android 12-based One UI 4.0. It should arrive early next year, or maybe even earlier.

Coming back to the latest update, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G is getting fixes for more than 60 privacy and security issues with this month’s SMR. The majority of them were found in Google’s version of Android but the new SMR also contains dozens of SVEs (Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures). These are security issues that only affect the Korean firm’s Android-powered devices. A bunch of the vulnerabilities patched in this month’s security update were of critical severity, Samsung says.

October security update is now rolling out to the Galaxy Z Flip 5G in the US

Samsung began rolling out the October SMR in the last week of September. Over the past three weeks or so, the company has seeded the new security patch to dozens of Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The international versions of the Galaxy Z Flip 5G started picking it up last week. The update has now arrived in the US as well.

If you own a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G and live in the US, you can expect to receive the latest update in a few days if you haven’t already. As usual, a notification should prompt you to download the OTA (over the air) update once it becomes available for your phone. You can also manually check for updates though. Simply navigate to Settings >> Software update and tap on Download and install to see if there’s an OTA update pending download. If there is, you’ll be prompted to download it.
