Motorola Edge+ Picks Up December Update While Pixel 6 Awaits

Motorola isn’t among the fastest Android OEMs when it comes to software updates. But there are exceptions at times. In one such exceptional case, the Lenovo-owned company has released the December 2021 Android security patch to one of its recent flagships before Google’s latest Pixel 6 series. The Motorola Edge+ is currently receiving the December update on Verizon’s network. Well, the phone is exclusive to Verizon anyways.

The latest update for the Motorola Edge+ comes with firmware version RPB31.Q1-19-58-30-4. According to the official changelog on Verizon’s website (via), the new software package only brings this month’s SMR (security maintenance release) and nothing else. So there are no new features and/or other user-facing changes and enhancements in tow here.

Nonetheless, if you’re rocking this 2020 Motorola flagship, you can be on the lookout for a new OTA (over the air) update in the coming days if you haven’t already received it. As always, you should receive a notification about the update once it becomes available for your phone. You can tap “Yes, I’m in” to start downloading the new software package.

If you haven’t received the notification, you can also manually check for updates from the Settings app on your phone. Simply navigate to About phone > System updates and tap Yes, I’m in. Now, wait until the download completes and tap Install now. Your phone will restart automatically after the install.

Motorola Edge+ will get the Android 12 update

The Motorola Edge+ launched in April 2020 with Android 10 out of the box. It received the Android 11 update in March this year. The company had promised to offer two major Android OS updates to the phone. So it should receive the Android 12 update as well.

Unfortunately, as we mentioned earlier, Motorola isn’t as fast as some of its rivals in releasing the latest software updates to its phones. Barring a few exceptions like this, the company is hardly on time with security updates, which don’t come as frequently as from the likes of Samsung and Google. The Motorola Edge+ typically gets one security patch every two months. So, keeping all this in mind, we don’t expect the phone to receive the Android 12 update anytime soon.

Meanwhile, Motorola is busy launching one after another smartphone across various price points. It launched seven phones in November and followed up with two more in December so far. There are a bunch more in the pipeline for an early 2022 release. We will let you know when these phones go official.
