Samsung has now officially launched its Galaxy S22 series of smartphones and the most interesting, thanks in part to the new S Pen, is arguably the new Ultra variant. The new S Pen, unlike the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, is garaged. Just as it was on the Galaxy Note series. And that’s going to be a massive improvement in support for the gadget. But that’s hardly all that the accessory has going for it. The S Pen included with the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra may have more improvements than any prior S Pen.

What else did Samsung improve about its S Pen on Galaxy S22 Ultra?

Now, part of what will make the S Pen experience better for Galaxy S22 Ultra is in the display of the handset itself too. The 1440 x 3088-pixel resolution is matched with a variable refresh rate from 1-120Hz. That’s automatically adjusted as needed. And that should mean that writing is smoother and more natural than ever before with the S Pen. Although Samsung hasn’t hinted at the touch sampling rate, as of this writing.

Improvements have been made to the languages users can write in with the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra S Pen as well. Handwriting to text, on the software side, now works in a total of 88 languages.

Finally, the new S Pen, as indicated in leaks prior to the announcement, has lower latency than ever before. What makes that impressive, of course, is that the previous S Pen had a latency of just 9ms. That’s just 0.009 seconds of latency, for clarity. Roughly nine-thousandths of a second. The new S Pen takes that number down even further.

In fact, it cuts latency by 70-percent. This should bring the latency down to just over 0.0027 seconds. So writing with the new S Pen will be more natural than the prior iteration. At the very least in terms of marks appearing as you write or draw.

…with one caveat

The primary caveat to all of this, at least if you want the newly garaged S Pen and a Note experience, is that you’ll need to buy the most expensive version of the new Galaxy S22 series. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will be available on February 25 starting from $1199. That’s as compared to the Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus at $799 and $999, respectively.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will be available in Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green, and Burgundy. And pre-orders from the company will net buyers a 200 gift card and a free memory upgrade on the storage side.
