Samsung is likely going to announce the Galaxy Watch 5 at Unpacked in August, alongside its new foldables. And as we get closer to that date, we’re learning more about the upcoming watch. It recently stopped by the FCC, which showed off something pretty interesting.
We already knew that the Galaxy Watch 5 was going to have bigger batteries for all sizes. But now we’re learning, thanks to the FCC, that it’ll also support faster wireless charging. The FCC revealed that the wireless charger which has the same model number that was spotted at RRA last month – ER-OR900 – is going to boast 10W charging.
The Galaxy Watch 5 could double charging speeds, compared to its predecessors
Prior to the Galaxy Watch 5, all Galaxy Watch smartwatches maxed out at 5W charging speed. So it doesn’t make much sense to make a 10W wireless charger for a wearable, if none can take advantage. Which means that Galaxy Watch 5 is most likely getting 10W wireless charging. Or Samsung is still testing it, and it might not launch til the Galaxy Watch 6. But with it being tested by the FCC, it’s most likely coming with this year’s model.
While the charging speed is twice as fast, that doesn’t mean that the Galaxy Watch 5 will charge twice as fast. With charging, there are going to be losses involved, especially when factoring in these faster charging speeds. So it’ll be faster, it won’t necessarily be twice as fast.
Since Samsung jumped over to Wear OS for its smartwatches last year, the battery life did decline, down to about a day to a day and a half. So with this faster charging speed, it could make the battery life seem less of an issue.
Of course, we’ll only know when Samsung announces the Galaxy Watch 5 later this year. Fingers crossed that the charger will stay in the box, unlike its smartphones.
