The CoverScreen OS app is now available for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. It is a third-party app that makes the tiny external display on the phone a lot more usable. Developed by XDA Recognized Developer jagan2, this app was first released for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 last year.
Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Flip 4 earlier this month with several notable improvements over the 2021 model. But the screen sizes remained unchanged, both the internal folding screen and the external one. While the company has added more functionality to the cover screen, you need to unfold the device for most stuff. The screen is mostly limited to one-tap functions. You can access select quick settings toggles, check out time and weather, make payments via Samsung Pay, take photos and videos, see notifications, and control media playback. For anything else, Samsung thinks the screen is too small.
This is where the CoverScreen OS app comes in. It is a launcher app that lets you use the tiny screen on the outside of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 as a regular smartphone screen. You get a full app drawer here. With this launcher app, you can open any other app (some games too) on the cover screen. You can also access all third-party widgets and quick settings toggles and do much more.

CoverScreen OS supports caller ID for VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calls over apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Line. It features powerful media playback controls, including an interactive progress bar. The launcher app offers gesture navigation on the cover screen and adds features such as voice typing and QWERTY and T9 keyboards. You can reply to messages using a keyboard or voice input. It also supports Samsung’s Flex Mode and brings an on-screen LED notification indicator.
All in all, CoverScreen OS lets you get more out of the tiny external display on your brand-new Galaxy Z Flip 4 or the Galaxy Z Flip 3. You can do a lot without unfolding the device. However, since the app is still in development, you may encounter occasional issues with it. You’ll have to bear with those until the developer rolls out a patch.
