Lenovo executive Luca Rossi has asserted that the company plans to make 80% of its devices consumer-repairable by 2025, The Verge reports.

Modular devices have caught the eyes of manufacturers for some time now, and more companies are interested in launching devices with modular parts. A company called Framework has launched a 13-inch modular laptop that is fully user-repairable and supports DIY kits. Now, more prominent manufacturers are expected to join the trend, including Lenovo.

Speaking at the Canalys EMEA Forum 2023, a Lenovo executive promised, “More than 80 percent of our devices will be able to be repaired by the customer.” The Chinese company is currently producing some of the best-selling laptops and Chromebooks in the market.

Future Lenovo devices would be consumer-repairable

Lenovo is not a newcomer to the modular gadgets world. The company has previously unveiled a modular concept laptop called Project Aurora. The product remained a concept and never came to life. However, the company may fulfill its promise and make 80% of its devices consumer-repairable by 2025.

According to Rossi, “Batteries, SSD, many things will not any longer be sealed into the product but will be available for the customer to be to repaired on site and then save a lot of waste.”

Making laptops more consumer-repairable is an appreciated deed, but the reasons behind it are also interesting. The tech companies are pledged to reduce their e-waste and carbon footprint. Thus, they should not force customers to buy extra accessories. Apple’s move from Lightning port to USB-C on iPhone 15 series is a clear example of this new agenda. The European Union could also make smartphone manufacturers switch to replaceable batteries instead of sealing batteries to the phone.

Consumer-repairable laptops could significantly reduce repairability costs for users as they don’t need to pay for the repairman. Additionally, it reduces e-waste and extends the lifespan of products. Currently, many people would rather replace their devices than have them repaired because repairs are frequently too expensive. Lenovo may be able to convince more customers to repair their gadgets rather than replace them by making repairs more convenient and affordable.
