Right at the tail end of last month, Netflix announced it was adding the Grand Theft Auto series to its lineup of mobile game offerings via the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. This release came out on consoles and PC in November of 2021. And now it’s finally making the jump to mobile devices. You can play the trilogy on Android and iOS devices if you have a Netflix account. And just like all of Netflix’s other releases, you can access these games at no additional charge.

Interestingly, we speculated that each of the three games may be available in one package like the PC release. But that isn’t the case. Each game is a separate install. You will need a Netflix subscription if you want to access the Netflix version. The good news is that if you don’t subscribe to Netflix, you can still play the definitive edition versions of each game on mobile.

The Grand Theft Auto trilogy games can be played outside of Netflix on mobile

Netflix is the least expensive way to experience these games on mobile if you already subscribe to the service. But not everyone does. You won’t be left out of playing these games though. Rockstar is publishing them on Android and iOS as regular, non-Netflix releases too.

They will end up costing you $19.99 a piece though if you go that route. This is on par with the cost of the PC and console versions. So you’re not paying any more or less. With that in mind, you may want to consider if mobile is where you would want to buy them. There is another alternative as well.

If you don’t feel like paying the $19.99 for the Definitive Edition, Rockstar still offers the classic versions on mobile. All three games are still currently available on Android for $4.99 each. You still get the same game, although it may lose some of the features that the definitive editions introduced. Also worth noting is that Rockstar could pull these from the Play Store at any time. Rockstar hasn’t said it would do this. But there’s reason to believe it might at some point.

All three original versions of the game used to be available on Steam. However, Rockstar pulled them in October of 2021. It then released the Definitive Edition of the trilogy the following month. In short, download the $4.99 versions while you can if you don’t care about the Definitive Edition features. Or if you have Netflix, download all three Definitive Edition games for free.
