Blackmagic Design launched its professional-grade Blackmagic Camera app for iPhones in September last year. The company has finally introduced the same for Android devices too, but with a twist. The Blackmagic Camera app for Android works only on select Samsung and Pixel smartphones at the moment. For those unaware, Blackmagic Design is well-known for making high-quality digital film cameras and the DaVinci Resolve software.

The Blackmagic Camera app currently only supports select Samsung and Pixel phones

The Blackmagic Camera app for Android currently only works on a few Samsung and Pixel smartphones. The app is compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S24 series smartphones. On the Google Pixels, the app works only on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 lineups at the moment.

The Blackmagic Camera app is available to download in the Google Play Store for free. The company hasn’t yet revealed when and if the professional-grade camera application will be compatible with other Android devices. Given the popularity it has gained on iPhones in less than a year since its launch, we can expect the brand will provide support for more Android smartphones in the future.

It provides professional-grade photography features completely free

The Blackmagic Camera app for Android offers high-end photography features meant for professional photographers for completely free. The interface of the app on Android is similar to its iOS counterpart, with an overlaid heads-up display with important information. It allows shooting videos in 16:9 or vertical aspect ratios. You can capture in both H.264 and H.265 space-efficient formats.

The app provides professional audio options like VU or PPM audio meters. There are also other professional monitoring tools like Zebra settings. These allow checking exposure, focus assist, frame guides, and more. Notably, the Blackmagic Camera app also flaunts a built-in chat workspace. It allows Blackmagic Cloud project members to have conversations about shots and quickly share creative ideas.

Notably, the Galaxy S23 Ultra users can capture videos in a stunning 8K footage. For Pixels, it is limited to 4K quality on the Pixel 8 Pro, which sports a less powerful camera system. The app also supports saving captured footage directly to Blackmagic’s cloud service. It allows users to make recorded videos easily accessible to others.
