The PS VR2 is a solid VR headset that one would think was only for use with the PS5 console, but as it so happens, making it compatible with PC was always the plan. That might seem weird considering it’s also designed for the PS5. When you think about it though adding PC compatibility makes sense for Sony Interactive Entertainment. Just about every other VR headset is compatible with PC. Even completely wireless, self-contained VR headsets like the Meta Quest 2 and later.
So why not the PS VR2? Well, Sony never really intended to make the PS VR2 a PS5-only headset. In fact, the Japanese news site AV Watch had an interview with SIE and the company said that the developers of the headset were aware that adding PC compatibility was important. As they began designing the headset making it work with PC was being considered.
So, SIE was already thinking about making the PS VR2 work with PCs before the headset hit the market. Now that the headset has been out for a year, you might be wondering where that PC compatibility is. Technically, it’s here now.
The PS VR2 is compatible with PC with a dedicated adapter
If you want to use your PS VR2 headset with your PC, you’ll need Sony’s dedicated adapter. This little accessory retails for $60, and its function is simple. You plug your headset into the adapter, then you plug the adapter into your PC. Now you can access tons of games via Steam. There are a few caveats. You need the SteamVR app installed, and you need to download the free PS VR2 app from Steam. Presumably so you can link your PlayStation account.
As pointed out by AV Watch (spotted by Wccftech), the adapter officially launched today. It’s supposed to be available globally, and it’s listed both on Sony’s PlayStation Direct website and at retailers like Best Buy. However, it appears to be out of stock in both locations. So your best bet on getting one is to simply keep an eye out for restocks. Unfortunately, stock ran out very quickly it seems following the adapter’s launch on the morning of August 7. And as has been the case with several PS5-related items over the past few years, there’s already a large amount of the adapters listed on third-party seller sites like Mercari, and at least one on eBay.
SIE wanted to expand the range of experiences people could have with PS VR2
PS VR2’s game library is pretty limited compared to what you can find on PC. If you look at sites like SteamDB, you can see that a steady number of games have been published on Steam every year for several years. So far in 2024 alone, 308 VR games have been released. The PS VR2 on PS5 has far fewer titles than that. While many of them are likely very good, people like choice. And there are many PS VR2 owners who also own gaming PCs.
To that end, SIE wanted to ensure that PS VR2 owners could enjoy as many gaming experiences as possible with their headsets. So the company decided on PC compatibility to make that happen. “We have made it PC-compatible to provide people who use PlayStation VR2 and also have a Gaming PC to enjoy a lot of VR content on their PC, and to expand the range of VR experiences on PS VR2,” said SIE to AV Watch.
If you own a PS VR2 and have been hoping for more games to play with it, it looks like you’ll now have a much wider selection.
