Flappy Bird took the smartphone world by storm a decade ago. Its simple yet addictive concept resulted in tens of thousands of dollars in earnings per day. The developer decided to remove it from the major app stores for altruistic reasons. However, in a surprise announcement, the original Flappy Bird will return soon.
The game will be back thanks to the Flappy Bird Foundation, a group of fans who acquired the rights. So, it seems that Dong Nguyen, the developer of the original game, is not involved beyond negotiations. Currently, the team is hyping up the game’s return to try to capture as much attention as possible.
Flappy Bird will return after 10 years
Flappy Bird’s return already has a website, but it’s basically a page with links to social platforms. There’s an X account and a Telegram channel where you can get all the news about it. There is still no official release date for the game. The website only says that it will be available “coming soon” in the most popular mobile app stores.
The Flappy Bird Foundation posted a short trailer that suggests a Candy Crush-style progression system. Players will go through hundreds of levels, reaching score goals. Flappy Bird was easily recognizable because of its pixel art aesthetic, which used classic Mario Bros. pipes as obstacles. The new game will maintain the aesthetic, with more varied worlds. It even seems that there will be unlockable characters and more new features.
Much has changed in the last decade
It will be fascinating to see the public’s response to the return of Flappy Bird. Things have changed a lot in the last decade, so people’s tastes are different. However, nostalgia can be more powerful than you think. Anyway, it probably won’t be as popular as the original game. Let’s remember that Nguyen pulled the game from the Play Store and App Store because it was creating addiction. By doing so, the developer forfeited the $50,000 a day that the game generated due to personal convictions, which is commendable.
