2025 Audi A5 Avant Photos, engines & full specs

In 2025, Audi adopted a new naming system for its cars, so instead of showing a sixth generation of the A4, it unveiled a fourth generation of the A5, stirring its customers’ emotions.

While the A4 was introduced in 1994 and was available mostly as a sedan and as a station wagon (named the Avant), the A5 was launched in 2007 and was available as a coupe, five-door hatchback (named the Sportback), and convertible. When the automaker decided to change the naming system and use the odd numbers for vehicles fitted with an internal combustion engine and the even ones for EVs, the gasoline-powered A4 was replaced by the A5. The new model was developed on a new platform named PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) and was available as a sedan and station wagon. However, the former was a five-door hatchback that mimicked the shape of the sedan, while the latter clearly followed Audi’s design book for this kind of vehicle that the automaker traditionally called Avant.

At the front, the 2025 Audi A5 Avant boasted a new look featuring a shorter singleframe grille, albeit wide. A pair of LED headlights with an option of matrix LEDs flanked it. They created an aggressive look for this vehicle, even though the automaker targeted the family car segment. Lower, on the bumper, the automaker added a rectangular-shaped air intake that housed the radar for the advanced safety systems. In addition, a pair of triangular scoops mounted on the sides helped the vehicle get a lower drag coefficient since they created an air curtain around the bodywork.

In 1977, Audi introduced the Avant nameplate in its dictionary to denote its station wagons. At first, it used it on the 100 lineup. Then, the 80 and the A4 and A6 adopted it. However, the A5 lineup didn’t have any estate version, so the 2025 A5 Avant was the first to use it, and the vehicle’s shape clearly followed the automaker’s design principles. At the front, the car had a short nose followed by a raked and not-so-tall greenhouse. The roofline was extended beyond the rear seats and was sloped down in an arched line to the raked-forward tailgate. Thanks to that shape, the car looked like a shooting brake more than a regular estate vehicle. Audi considered that it was worth it to trade some trunk space for the exterior look. Another first for the first A5 Avant was the use of flush door handles with sculptured lower areas instead of the grab-handle types from the previous A4 lineup. At the back, the bumper was extended on the lower side by a diffuser and housed one or two real exhausts, depending on the engine version.

Customers found inside the 2025 Audi A5 Avant cabin a pair of high-bolstered bucket seats at the front separated by a wide center console that housed the gear selector, two cup holders, and an armrest. Fronting the driver was a curved display resembling the one from the Q6 e-tron. This was divided into two sections: one that showed the instrument panel and another for the infotainment system. Furthermore, as an option, Audi offered a 10.9-inch touchscreen for the side passenger, who could be the DJ for the entire vehicle or watch movies without disturbing anyone else. In the back, the automaker installed a split-folding (40/20/40) bench seat, which provided more headroom for those seated there than the A5 Sedan. Behind, the trunk space was 476 liters (16.8 cu-ft), just 31 liters (1.1 cu-ft) more than its hatchback sibling.

Audi unveiled the A5 Avant in the summer of 2024 and announced it with a choice of three engines. Customers could get the vehicle with a two-liter mild hybrid turbo diesel or two versions of a two-liter gasoline unit. The standard transmission across the range was an automatic gearbox that sent the power to the front or all corners, depending on the version.
