Play OverviewPlay Overview

Halo is the longstanding sci-fi shooting video game series that started when Halo: Combat Evolved launched alongside the Xbox in 2001. The franchise has featured on every Xbox platform since then, with Halo 5: Guardians serving as the latest entry in the series on Xbox One.

Weapons must be used to deplete opponents’ energy shields before being able to damage them, so multiplayer combat encounters are a game of cat and mouse. Add to this the melee of attacks, varied terrain and advanced artificial intelligence of the enemies, and you can see why it takes a long time to master.

The game’s futuristic setting, dramatic music, fantastical weapons and diverse enemies makes Halo 5: Guardians competitive, exuberant and fun, without taking itself too seriously. Whether in its single-player campaign or online multiplayer modes, players revel in the lore, story and heroic characters as much as the necessary quick reactions and headshots.

Our examiner, Jo Robertson, first checked Halo: The Master Chief Collection 4 years ago. It was re-examined by Andy Robertson and updated 8 weeks ago.

Rated Parental Guidance (PG) for Mild Violence, Mild Themes, Scary Scenes.

Users Interact: The game enables players to interact and communicate with each other, so may expose players to language usually associated with older rated games.

In Europe, PEGI state: The game features strong violence towards human and animal characters, by melee contact, explosives, vehicles and various firearms. The majority of the campaign is concerned with dispatching enemy alien characters, but – though not the aim – human and animal NPCs can be attacked. Shooting is often accompanied by blood effects, which either spray from characters or pool around their bodies, which fall lifelessly to the floor after several blows and remain in situ. In one scene in Halo 4, a huge beam vaporises a group of scientists, who burn up, layer by layer. A close up of a woman screaming is shown, as her skin, then muscle and then skeleton are burned to nothing. Some mild language included in the series, including 'hell', 'dammit', 'b*!%h', 'prick', 'friggin', ‘a$s’ and 'b@*!%$@s'.
