Play OverviewPlay Overview

The Crew 2 (2014) is the latest in a series of open-world racing and exploration games set in a scaled-down version of the United States. The emphasis is on enjoyable and exciting driving more than realism. It's a lot like Forza Horizon, although can be played on PlayStation and PC as well as Xbox.

Unlike most racing games, The Crew offers boats and planes as well as cars. You can instantly switch between them while you're exploring the map and race all 3 types of vehicles. You can also extensively customise their colour, livery and appearance (and share this with other players if you like).

In both the original and the second game you participate in races to earn money or explore the large map that spans forests, swamps, grasslands, mountains and cities. Here you will find skill-based mini-events (such as speed-traps and slaloms), loot boxes with upgrades to your vehicles and opportunities for photos which can earn you money.

You can play it at your own pace and in your own way. If you choose to race, your ultimate goal is to become the "King of Motornation", which you achieve by beating the game's racing progression. In The Crew 2, you can participate in the Live Summit events, which rank you against online players globally in a set of challenges for exclusive rewards that change weekly. You can also participate in the month-long events called Motorpass, in which you complete quests for cars and customisation parts.

The Crew 2's racing progression is split into four categories:
  • Pro racing, where you drive touring cars, powerboats, air race planes and alpha Grand Prix F1-style cars.
  • Offroad, where you use motocross bikes, rally cross cars and rally raid cars.
  • Street race, where you drive street race cars, hypercars, drift cars and drag cars.
  • Freestyle, where you use Jetsprint boats, Monster trucks, demolition derby cars and aerobatics planes.

Our examiner, Ben Kendall, first checked The Crew 2 3 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 2 weeks ago.

11+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. It's also important to ensure children understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. The open play style and exuberant driving make this fun for youngsters not ready for a fully open world. It's not completely tame but does offer a middle ground open-world for children and teenagers to enjoy.
