It is discrimination when one person is treated worse than another in a comparable situation without there being a factual reason for it. In Germany, discrimination in working life or in everyday life on racial or antisemitic grounds, or because of ethnic origin, gender, religion, disability, age or sexual identity is prohibited. This is laid down in the General Equal Treatment Act (Allgemeines Gleichbehandlungsgesetz, AGG).
There are various options and platforms if you want to inform yourself about the topic of anti-discrimination. On the part of the government, the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency offers an overview of forms of discrimination and measures to protect against discrimination. In addition, the German Anti-Discrimination Association (Antidiskriminierungsverband Deutschland) and the Media Service Integration (Mediendienst Integration) offer further information on the topic of anti-discrimination.
If you have been or are being discriminated against, there are many counselling services and contact points. For example, the counselling team of the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency advises and supports you in German, English, Arabic and in sign language.
You can find an overview of national and regional anti-discrimination counselling centres that you can contact by email, telephone and in some cases in person on the website of the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency.
