Lord Of The Rings Anime Goes Epic In First Amazing Video Reveal
There is more lore coming to the Lord of Rings world to excite fans. At the end of the year, a Lord of the Rings anime is coming to theaters, set to be a prequel to the original trilogy, and the first trailer was just revealed. The full title of the anime is The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.
The Lord of the Rings anime will focus on the story of the House of Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox), who was once the mighty King of Rohan. The plot for this film is set around 200 years before the original Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the War of the Ring.

Freca (Shaun Dooley), a chieftain of Dunland suggests Wulf (Luke Pasqualino), his son, marry Helm’s daughter Hera (Gaia Wise). However, Helm doesn’t agree and ends up killing Freca. Wulf vows revenge and returns several years later to take down Rohan and Helm.
Helm and his people end up having to flee and take refuge in a fortress to survive. Though the tale is about Helm and how he became such a famous king, Hera ends up actually being the main character in this Lord of the Rings anime.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim hits theaters December 13.
She is shown often throughout the trailer as she tries to bring hope to her people and fight for her king. The trailer does a great job of highlighting the main theme, and some of the more epic monsters.
Philippa Boyens, one of the producers for the film and co-writer for the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, talks about why they chose this direction for the anime prequel during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“We know Helm has a daughter, and we know that she was central to the conflict that happened. But myself, and especially screenwriter Phoebe Gittins, were drawn to her. We could feel the weight of being that unnamed daughter, which immediately piqued our interest: Who was she? How did she live?”
It might be better to say this Lord of the Rings anime is more of an anime-style film or anime-adjacent.
This Lord of the Rings anime prequel aims to answer those questions and show her place in the story. Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) is the director, with Jason DeMarco (Ninja Kamui) as another producer. There is also at least one returning voice, with Miranda Otto (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), who played Eowyn, as the narrator of The War of the Rehirrim.
There is some debate on whether or not The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is truly an anime or not. While there is a Japanese director involved in the filming, Warner Bros. is using their western department to handle the production of the film. Additionally, the entire voice cast is English.
It might be better to say this Lord of the Rings anime is more of an anime-style film or anime-adjacent. Still, the art style is much closer to a Japanese anime than a Western type of animation. Either way, it’s looking to be a great film worth checking out when it releases in theaters.
For those who love Lord of the Rings, this anime isn’t the only exciting news. Warner Bros. has also announced a new live-action film, with Andy Serkis (Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi), who played Gollum, to direct and star in the film. The War of Rohirrim, will come to theaters on December 13.
