altered dominants in minor 3rds ala Martino, Coltrane, Tyner
I wanted to demonstrate that you can move dominant 7th chords and their related harmonies in minor 3rds even if they are not based on the diminshed scale. In this case, I am taking the 7th mode of melodic minor and playing
2 arpeggios from it and moving the whole construct up in minor 3rds against a G7 chord.
Some naysayers have shied away from these because some of the arpeggios contain an F#/Gb but if you listen to McCoy Tyner, Pat Martino, John Coltrane (and really, any post-bop player), these devices are used all the time.
I am using Ab Melodic Minor, B Melodic Minor, D Melodic Minor and F Melodic over the G7. Note, the entire
sequence is played over a G7 chord. The chord symbols are for analysis only.
