With its smooth gel ink and innovative tip design, Pilot's Hi-Tec-C line has a long and well-loved history here at JetPens. Though we enjoy being able to use four or five colors of Hi-Tec-C ink at once, the Coleto multi pen doesn't stop there—it can be customized with any combination of ink and pencil lead. The inner workings of the pen can be a little daunting, so read on to find out how to install and replace Coleto components to build your perfect multi pen.

Watch the video above to see an overview of the Pilot Hi-Tec-C Coleto pen and how it works.

Coleto Characteristics
Pilot Hi-Tec-C Coleto Bodies
Five Pilot Hi-Tec-C Coleto bodies: 2 components, 3 components, 4 components, and a red and a black executive-style Hi-Tec-C Coleto 1000.
Coleto pen bodies are completely empty, ready to be filled with your desired components. The bodies are available in several designs, from playful pastels to muted options that are suitable for the office. They can hold two, three, four, or five components.

Pilot Hi-Tec-C Coleto Refills
Coleto refills: an eraser and gel ink.
The Coleto can be filled with gel ink, pencil lead, an eraser. All of these components have one feature in common: a colorful fin that extends from the top of the refill. On ink refills, this fin matches the color of the ink inside to help you select the right color. Non-ink refills, such as the pencil and eraser, have larger fins to help differentiate them.

Open the pen's flip cap and thread the refills through the springs to install.
Open the pen's flip cap and make sure that the refills are aligned with the pen's grooves to securely install them..
To install any component into an empty slot, open the flip cap at the top of the pen, and simply thread the component through the springs in the slot. Make sure that the curve of the fin is facing outwards and that the fin's grooves are aligned with the grooves in the pen. The component will sit loosely in the slot, but don't worry—closing the cap secures it in place.

How to Refill a Coleto
How to Refill Coleto Ink Components
Pull out the old ink component.
Take a new ink component.
Insert the new ink component into the pen body.

Whether your ink has run out or you just want to try a new color, swapping the ink components of the Coleto is easy. Simply pull out the old ink component and insert a new one, just as you would when installing a component into an empty Coleto body.

How to Refill Coleto Mechanical Pencil Lead Components
Remove the plastic tube from the lead component
Insert new lead into the chamber.
Insert the pencil component back into the Coleto body.

Refilling the Coleto's mechanical pencil is a little less straightforward: instead of replacing the component itself, you can refill the lead directly by opening up the component. Coleto pencil components take either 0.3 mm or 0.5 mm lead. Check which size of lead you need by looking for the number on the fin. While 0.5 mm lead is a little more common, there are still plenty of options for 0.3 mm. We go over different lead brands and their available sizes in more detail in our mechanical pencil lead guide.

Once you know the lead size and have found your lead of choice, open up your Coleto pen and pull out the mechanical pencil component. The tab may feel loose once it's pulled free of the pen, but it shouldn't fall off. Pull the translucent section near the tip away from the metal tube to find the lead chamber. Then insert a new piece of lead into the lead chamber and push the translucent section back onto the tube. Press the pencil component's tab to select it, then press again to advance the lead. It can take a few presses for the new piece of lead to advance out of the tip.

How to Refill Coleto Eraser Components
Pull out the old eraser component.
Insert a new component with thin plastic end first.

If you have a mechanical pencil component in your Coleto, it's also a good idea to have an eraser. The Coleto's eraser component comes with one eraser already installed, and refills are available separately. The eraser extends from the component tip and advances when the tab is pushed, just like a pencil lead.

To refill the Coleto eraser, first press the eraser component tab to select it, then press it again to advance the eraser. Hold the tab down to open the eraser's clutch, so you can pull the last of the old eraser out of the component tube.

Keeping the clutch open, insert the new eraser refill directly into the eraser component, with the thin plastic end first. Once the eraser has been fully inserted, release the eraser tab to secure it. When you're ready to erase again, press the tab twice to select and begin advancing the new refill.
