Real Madrid have won the first competition of the new season, the UEFA Super Cup. Thanks to goals from Fede Valverde and new signing Kylian Mbappé, they defeated Atalanta 2-0. It is their sixth UEFA Super Cup win, more than any other club.

This victory also continues the incredible run of Spanish clubs in European competitions. LALIGA EA SPORTS sides have lifted 37 of the 75 major UEFA trophies of the 21st century, which is more than the clubs of the other four major European leagues combined; that teams from England, Italy, Germany and France have won 29 in this same time period.

Of the 24 Champions League finals played this century, there have been 11 Spanish successes, while 12 of the 24 Europa League or UEFA Cup finals were also won by teams from Spain. This has meant that 18 of the 24 UEFA Super Cups held this century have featured at least one Spanish side, with 14 victories.

What’s more, LALIGA clubs have won their last 19 Champions League or Europa League finals against foreign rivals, a run which stretches back over 20 years to 2001.

This week’s UEFA Super Cup was the 75th major UEFA trophy put up for grabs in the 21st century, after 24 editions of the UEFA Super Cup, 24 completed Champions League campaigns, 24 Europa League/UEFA Cup finals and three finals of the Conference League.

Of these 75 major UEFA titles, LALIGA EA SPORTS clubs have won 37 of them, while the next closest league is the Premier League with 21 fewer European trophies in this time; English sides have claimed 16 this century. Seven were won by Italian clubs, six by German clubs, three by Portuguese clubs, three by Russian clubs, one by Ukrainian clubs, one by Dutch clubs and one by Greek clubs.

The 37 Spanish triumphs on the continent have been achieved by six different clubs. Real Madrid have the most with 13, followed by Sevilla FC with eight, FC Barcelona with seven, Atlético de Madrid with six, Valencia CF with two and Villarreal CF with one. Three other Spanish clubs have reached UEFA finals in this time too: namely Deportivo Alavés, RCD Espanyol and Athletic Club.
